Prescription information:
Tadalafil is usually prescribed for men to treat impotence or the inability to get or sustain an erection (erectile dysfunction). Tadalafil, part of a class of medications called PDE (phosphodiesterase) inhibitors, works by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation in order to help cause an erection. Tadalafil cannot stimulate sexual desire, prevent pregnancy, protect against a STD (sexually transmitted disease) such as HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) or cure erectile dysfunction. Occasionally, tadalafil is prescribed for other uses and conditions. Your doctor or pharmacist can answer any questions and/or supply additional information needed.
Usage:
Tadalafil comes as a tablet to be taken orally. It is used before sexualactivity, but should not be taken more than once in 24 hours. Your doctor willtell you how long prior to sexual activity you should take tadalafil. Patientsshould take tadalafil exactly as directed by their physician, carefullyfollowing the directions on the prescription label. Do not take any more or anyless of this medication than is prescribed by your physician. Make certain toask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any product information, usage ordosage instructions you do not fully understand. Prescription dosages arespecifically calculated to suit each individual, therefore never share yourmedication or allow anyone else to take your prescription. Your initial dosewill most likely be increased or decreased depending upon your response totadalafil. Consult your physician if you experience troublesome side effects orif tadalafil is not effectively working for you. Ask your pharmacist anyquestions you may have about the refilling of your prescription.
Special dietary instructions:
Tadalafil can be taken with or without food. You may need to limit your useof alcohol while taking this medication. Alcohol can worsen the side effects oftadalafil, so be sure to discuss this with your physician. Also ask aboutdrinking grapefruit juice; it can alter the effectiveness of tadalafil.
Precautions:
Prior to taking tadalafil:
- tell your doctor and pharmacist if you have any known allergies to tadalafil or to any other drugs.
- if you are taking the alpha-blocker, Flomax (tamsulosin), at a dose of 0.4 mg daily, you may still take tadalafil. However, do not take tadalafil if you are taking any other alpha-blockers such as Hytrin (terazosin), Uroxatral (alfuzosin), Minipress (prazosin) or Cardura (doxazosin).
- do not take tadalafil if you are taking or have taken medications containing nitrates. Medications containing nitrates are found in sprays, ointments, patches, tablets, sublingual (under the tongue) tablets and pastes. Ask your doctor if you’re not sure about your medications. Medications that contain nitrates include Isordril and Sorbitrate (isosorbide dinitrate), Imdir and ISMO (isosorbide mononitrate) and Nitro-BID, Nitro-Dur, Nitroquick, Nitrostat and other nitroglycerin formulations. Taking nitrates along with tadalafil can cause a sudden severe drop in blood pressure, dizziness or fainting, arm, jaw or chest pain, or a stroke or heart attack.
- tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any dietary supplements, herbal preparations, vitamins, and over-the-counter or prescription medications. Your doctor may have to change the doses of any other medications, plus closely monitor you for side effects. Definitely tell your doctor if you’re taking any of the following medications: other drugs or treatments for erectile dysfunction; Solfoton or Luminal (phenobarbitol), medications for high blood pressure, Dilantin (phenytoin), Calan, Isoprin, Covera or Verelan (verapamil), antifungals such as Sporanox (itraconazole), Diflucan (fluconazole) and Nizoral (ketocoazale); Tagamet (cimetadine); Biaxin (clarithromycin); Erythrocin, E.E.S. or E-Mycin (erythromycin); Danocrine (danazol); Decadron (dexamethasone); Rescriptor (delavirdine); medications designed to suppress the immune system such as Neoral or Sandimmune (cyclosporine); HIV protease inhibitors such as Norvir (ritonavir), Crixivan (indinavir) and Viracept (nelfinavir); Serazone (nefazodone); INH or Nydrazin (isoniazid); Dilacor, Cardizem or Tiazac (diltiazem); Prozac or Sarafem (fluxetine); Accolate (zafirlukast); Flagyl (metronidazole); Tegretol (carbamazapine); Rifadin or Rimactane (rifampin); TAO (troleandomycin); Serzone (nefazodine); Mycobin (rifabutin) or Zarontin (ethosuximide).
- do not start taking any dietary supplements, herbal preparations, prescription medications or over-the-counter medications without first checking with your physician.
- tell your doctor if you have a history of stroke; an irregular or life-threatening heart beat; have suffered a heart attack within the past three (3) months or a case of heart failure within the last six (6) months, if you’ve been diagnosed with a prolonged QT (heart condition), have a history of chest pain during sexual intercourse or have been medically advised against sexual activity due to a heart condition.
- tell your doctor if you have or you’ve ever had a condition such as sickle cell anemia, multiple myleloma or leukemia that may cause a prolonged erection, an erection lasting more than four (4) hours, a misshapen penis due to a condition such as Peyronie’s Disease, angulation or cavernosal fibrosis
- tell your doctor if you currently have or previously had heart, liver or kidney disease, stomach or intestine ulcers, an eye disease such as retinitis pigmentosa, blood disorders, low blood pressure or uncontrolled high blood pressure or any other medical conditions.
- tell your doctor if you’re planning to have any surgery in the future, including dental surgery.
After starting tadalafil:
- sexual intimacy can put a strain on your heart. Immediately call your physician if you experience any chest pain, irregular heartbeat, pounding in the chest or any other heart problems during sexual activity. Until cleared by your physician, refrain from any additional sexual activity.
- contact your physician immediately if you have an erection, whether it is painful or not, that lasts more than four (4) hours. A prolonged erection can case serious damage to penile tissue, if not treated.
- limit or avoid the drinking of alcohol. Alcoholic beverages, when taking tadalafil, can lower standing blood pressure, increase heart rate, cause dizziness and headaches and worsen other side effects.
- tadalafil can cause muscles aches and back pain within 12-24 hours after taking it. Normally, these aches will disappear within 48 hours. Contact your physician if this side effect becomes troublesome or does not go away.
- tadalafil is only for men. Women, especially ones of childbearing years, should not take this medication. If a pregnant or breast-feeding woman takes tadalafil, contact a physician.
- do not take any more of this medication than prescribed.
- tadalafil cannot protect you from sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. To guard against a STD, use of a condom is recommended.
- if scheduling any type of surgery, including dental procedures, be sure to tell the doctor or dentist, at the time you make your appointment, that you are taking tadalafil.
- exercise care when operating a motor vehicle or undertaking tasks that require mental alertness and physical dexterity. Tadalafil can cause dizziness, blurred or distorted images and other vision problems.
- remember to keep all appointments with your physician. Your response to tadalafil therapy may need to be monitored.
NOTE:
Make sure to inform all your healthcare providers thatyou using tadalafil. Should you require emergency medical care for a heartcondition, your medical treatment team will need to know when you last tookthis medication.
Possible side effects:
Side effects from tadalafil do occur. However, many patients experience noneat all or only minor side effects. Talk to your doctor if any of the followingsymptoms are severe or remain constant:
- heartburn or indigestion
- headache
- muscle aches or backache
- flushing
- runny or stuffy nose
These serious side effects are uncommon However, should you experience any of the problems below, please contact your physician at once:
- sustained and/or painful erection for more than four (4) hours
- vision changes such as seeing a blue tinge around objects or having trouble distinguishing between blue and green
- chest pain, pounding in the chest, irregular heartbeat
- fainting
NOTE:
Tadalafil may cause other side effects not listed. Contact your physician if you experience any unusual problems or bothersome conditions.
Proper storage of your medication:
Always store this medication in its original container. Keep tightly closedand out reach of children. Store at room temperature (between 68o -77o F) away from light, excess heat and moisture. Do not store inbathroom or near stove or oven in kitchen. Always discard any medication thatis beyond its expiration date or is no longer needed. Consult your pharmacistas to how to properly dispose of your medication.
How to handle an overdose or medical emergency:
If you feel you may have taken too much of this medication, contact yourdoctor or pharmacist right away.
In the event of an overdose, immediately contact your local poison controlcenter at 1-800-222-1222. Call 911 if you are having severe breathing difficulty or you’re with a patient who has collapsed or is not breathing.
Symptoms of an overdose can include:
- sustained erection for more than four (4) hours
- muscle aches or back pain
- runny or stuffy nose
- heartburn or indigestion
- flushing
WARNING(S):
Do not take this medication if you are allergic to tadalafil or any ingredient in it. Do not take tadalafil if you are taking a medication containing nitrates or if you’re taking alpha-blockers. Women should not take this medication; tadalafil is for men only.
